Similarities

I found it interesting that many of our selected poets had a great deal in common. Many attended Harvard College with the intent to practice law. However, for what ever reason they discovered a great love for poetry and literature. Another similarity was that several poets also attended school to become preachers, yet their love of writing deterred them from that path. I guess during this time period a person was somewhat limited as to his occupational path. Either they attended school and were educated, or they learned a trade to provide for their family. Wondered if anyone noticed any other similarities?

  1. Good insight. I also noticed the inclination for becoming preachers. Is that a reflection of the importance of religion to people in that day?

  2. I saw the similarities mentioned too. In addition it seemed to me that many had a lot of the same religious ideas on how to live and even on tying nature into religion.
